In light of the cooperation protocol signed by the two parties in Abu Dhabi
The Archive and the National Library are discussing with their Turkish counterpart the promotion of cooperation and the exchange of experiences.

His Excellency Abdullah Majid Al Ali, Acting Director General of the Archives and National Library, and his accompanying delegation, discussed ways to enhance cooperation with the Archives Directorate of the Republic of Turkey affiliated to the Presidency of the Republic in light of the provisions of the cooperation protocol that was signed between the two sides in Abu Dhabi, in the presence of: His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates - may God protect him - and His Excellency President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of the Turkish Republic, last February.
On this visit, His Excellency Abdullah Majid Al Ali said: The UAE-Turkish relations are witnessing positive developments and rapid growth in all areas of common interest, thanks to the joint will of the leaderships of the two countries in order to advance them towards broader horizons. This development aims to build bridges of friendship and cooperation in various fields. areas, and consolidating good relations in order to become a sustainable model of partnership that serves the interests of the two friendly countries. In this context, the desire of the Archive and the National Library to strengthen relations and forge partnerships with its Turkish counterpart comes in the matter of developing archival work in order to preserve the memory of the nation for generations according to the highest standards and best practices.
He added: In this context, the visit of a delegation from the Archives and the National Library in the UAE to the Archives Directorate of the Republic of Turkey affiliated to the Presidency of the Republic comes to enhance cooperation and support common goals, programs and activities of mutual benefit, and the exchange of pictures of archival documents, books, the exchange of experiences and technical and electronic knowledge, and partnerships in exhibitions. Scientific documents related to the archives, and this is among the provisions of the cooperation protocol that links the two archives in the two friendly countries.
He expressed his hope to enhance opportunities for cooperation between the two parties and to consolidate and deepen relations between the Archives, the National Library and the State Archives of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey. In support of common goals, especially since both archives are rich in historical documents in all their forms, in addition to that each archive will benefit from the expertise of the other archive and from the successful experiences it has achieved.
His Excellency highly appreciated what he and the accompanying delegation received of the hospitality, warm reception and attention upon their arrival in Turkey, and praised the busy program prepared by the administrative staff in the Turkish Archives in order to enrich the visit of the delegation of the Archives and the National Library with discussions, exchange of views, and access to the most prominent and important features of archival work in Turkey, and the historical records pertaining to the Gulf region and the Arabian Peninsula.
Al Ali called the specialists, experts and administrators of the Directorate of Archives of the Republic of Turkey to the Congress of the International Council of Archives, which will be hosted by Abu Dhabi in October 2023, which is the largest archival event that is held every four years and will discuss many topics and core issues related to the future of archives.
It is noteworthy that the Archive and the National Library in Abu Dhabi include among its global archives an Ottoman archive that is an important reference for researchers in the history of the Gulf region during that important historical era, and it looks forward to enriching it with more historical documents of various kinds from the Ottoman Archive, which is the third largest archive in the world. ; In terms of the number of historical documents kept, and other ancient Turkish archives.

The National Library and Archives enriches its participating platform in the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2022 with some of its publications that were translated into other languages for their great importance in documenting important stages of UAE history.
His Excellency Abdullah Majid Al Ali, Acting Director General of the National Library and Archives, said: The National Library and Archives seeks to promote the UAE modern history, which entails translating the books that document it into living foreign languages. The Tarjamat project selected the National Library and Archives’ most important translated publications to introduce the UAE’s ancient and glorious history as well as its prosperous present, and its building, advancement and development experience. We have finally taken the initiative to translate the following books into Hebrew: (Zayed, from Challenges to Union), (Zayed, Man Who Built a Nation) and (Qasr Al Hosn, the History of the Rulers of Abu Dhabi).
H.E. added: The translation of these sources promotes culture and supports the dissemination of cultural publications and exchange, furthermore, it is considered an important step towards introducing to the world the region’s history and civilization, as well as the pioneering UAE federation experience, which was the outcome of the tireless efforts of the Founding Father and Builder, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and his fellow Rulers. These books also document the various stages of development and progress the UAE witnessed under its wise leadership, which earned it the title and status of a model modern state.
His Excellency pointed out that these valuable translations play a major role in promoting to the world an ideal image of the UAE, which in turn enhances the desired constructive and civilized communication. The National Library and Archives has recently taken a special interest in translating some of its publications into Hebrew, which enhances cultural relations and promotes respect for other cultures.

It is noteworthy that the National Library and Archives’ participating platform at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2022 introduced three books, that were translated into other foreign languages, namely: (Zayed, from Challenges to Union), which reflects the great achievements of the Founding Father and Builder of the UAE, the Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan during the period from 1946 to 1971, and stands as a clear irrefutable evidence of his great vision and un-matched legendary progress. That period witnessed Sheikh Zayed’s accession to the reins of power, the fame he earned as a renowned " Desert Chief " in Al Ain oasis until he became the President of the UAE. This detailed research study includes a deep and interesting analysis of contemporary and notable figures as well as key events. The book also includes copies of highly valuable historic and archival documents.
As for the book entitled: (Zayed: Man Who Built a Nation), it provides the most detailed analysis of the life of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, supported and enriched by the collective memory of many of his contemporary figures who witnessed and participated in his long journey and glorious march, The 800 page book portrays and depicts his great unique biography and is supported by key references and unique archival photos from all over the world which enhance the new book content.
The book entitled: (Qasr al-Hosn, the History of the Rulers of Abu Dhabi 1793-1966) – is based on the official records of the Gulf region’s British Officials. It tackles, in five chapters, the historical overview, economic and political transformation witnessed by the sheikhdom of Abu Dhabi, its emergence to power and fame in the period between (1833- 1855), and Abu Dhabi, the leading Gulf coast sheikhdom (1855-1909), whereas the last chapter depicts the end of a stage and the beginning of new developments (1909-1966).

The National Library and Archives issues a new edition of (Liwa) journal in a distinguished new look consistent with its document-based national content

Concurrently with the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2022, the National Library and Archives launched the bi-annual refereed scientific (Liwa) journal, issued in Arabic and English, in its new look, both in paper and digital forms, at its participating platform at the book- fair.
On this occasion, His Excellency Abdullah Majid Al Ali, Acting Director- General of the National Library and Archives said: This journal’s new look reflects to the reader an impression of its valuable content of scientific and academic research. We look forward to presenting qualitative research and studies through the journal’s various editions to enrich the Emirati, Arab and international library with the UAE glorious history and ancient heritage, and to shed light on the Emirati archeology, which stands as irrefutable evidence of its ancient history.
H.E. added, "We look forward to incorporating this magazine with the National Library and Archives valuable publications on which researchers, academics and all interested in the history and heritage of the UAE and the Gulf region rely." The Liwa journal's research and studies’ significance is further enhanced because they are based on documented and reliable information.
His Excellency further added: We call on all writers and researchers on the history and heritage of the UAE and the Gulf region and invite them to participate with their valuable studies, and historic or academic research in the Liwa journal to contribute to enriching the general cultural scene with such an extensive reference that will surely enrich their studies and publications.
The new edition of Liwa journal:
The Liwa journal twenty-seventh edition included six research papers in Arabic, the first of which is: Zayed, the Leader of the people and the nation, in which Dr. Jayanti Robin Maitra sheds light on the historic and unique status which the UAE Founder and Builder, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan assumed as an exceptional Leader on whose hands success and prosperity were achieved in all fields. The research tackled his upbringing, high morals, his transfer from Abu Dhabi to Al Ain, his moral traits and rise as a leader, his unmatched generosity, his reign of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, his ideals, theory of governance, leadership, his keen interest in education, his glorious fruitful efforts in unifying the emirates and the establishment of the UAE, and his firm support for peace and just causes globally. The research concluded by mentioning the UAE people's great love for their Late Father and Leader who will always live on in their hearts, and their loyalty and devotion to him.
In the second research paper, entitled: "Military Affairs in Oman and the Trucial States in the First Half of the Twentieth Century", Dr. Bahiya bint Saeed Al-Adhubiya discussed the Gulf region people’s beating some major powers in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and even before; by virtue of their land and naval leadership and military skills. By time, the region managed to increase its land and naval forces, as well as its equipment, and to develop its armament and equipment. The research mentioned the key military terms in Oman and the Trucial States in the first half of the twentieth century.

 In the third research paper, entitled: The Story of the First Oil Concession in Abu Dhabi (1939-2014), Dr. Hamdan Al-Derai discussed the impact of oil on economy and focused on the prosperity witnessed by Abu Dhabi and its surroundings following the oil discovery and its consequent reflection on the economy.

The fourth research paper: "Gwadar Airport and Al-Mahatta Airport (in Sharjah) are important stations for British flights" - indicates that the British government realized that air, military and civil transportation is absolutely necessary to connect the vast empire’s regions. The problem that faced British military and civil aviation to India in 1920 was that the distance between Muscat and Gwadar was 266 miles above the sea, and at the time planes could not cover all that distance without landing; Accordingly, an agreement between Britain and Persia was necessary.
The fifth research paper recounts the history of "the coins and its usage as a commercial commodity in the emirates of the western coast of the Arabian Gulf before minting the national currency" noting that the use of other countries’ currencies paved the way for such currencies’ transformation into an imported commodity, in addition to the local demand for it in the Gulf markets to finance various commercial operations and foreign investments and local economic activities.
The Researcher Suhaila Al-Mansoori presented the book "The History of the Ya'ariba in Oman in the Period 1623-1747".
The journal included four other research papers in English, namely: "Zayed, the Leader of the people and the nation", "The Trucial Oman Scouts’ Contribution  to Sawt Al Sahel Radio", and "The Military in Oman and Trucial States in the First Half of the Twentieth Century", and "The Various British Archives" as Gulf  history sources in the post-digital era.

The National Library and Archives Honoring the Winners of the 12th Edition of the Young Historian Award

During the awards ceremony to honor the winning students of the 12th Edition of the Young Historian Award, H.E. Abdulla Majed Al Ali, Acting Director General, assured that the distinctive status of education in the UAE is attributable to the wise leadership of the Late Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, leader of the empowerment phase and of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, who paid great attention to education as “students are the future of the nation and source of its pride” as described by His Highness.
His Excellency said: “The Young Historian Award sponsored by the National Library and Archives and organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Education has proved its success and achieved excellence in research. If we think about the entire research papers submitted by the hardworking students, we will find that they were the fruit of their patriotism, sincere belonging to homeland and absolute loyalty to its prudent leadership.”
H.E. Acting Director General of the NLA expressed his happiness for achieving the objectives of this award as it has succeeded in instilling national culture among students.
At the end of his speech, he congratulated the winners, wished them further success and thanked the primary strategic partner, Ministry of Education, in organizing this award as well as the schools that were excited about this national project.
Mr. Hamad Al Humairi, Director of the Research and Knowledge Services Department and Chairman of the organizing committee, appreciated the students’ efforts in conducting serious national research papers that achieved high status in the library and cultural circles. He also thanked all participants and those who contributed to the success of this award, which promises a generation taking over in the future and enhances belonging to homeland and loyalty to its wise leadership.
Having assessed the participating students research papers in the Young Historian Award, 8 research papers and 4 reports were announced the winners, and they were from: Zainab Primary and Secondary School in Ras Al Khaimah, Al Ittihad National School in Al Ain, Al Nahda National Schools (for boys), Sheikh Zayed Private Academy for Girls, Emirates National Schools in Ras Al Khaimah, ADNOC Schools in Sas Al Nakhl, and Future Leaders School (Campus 2) in Abu Dhabi.
As for the Geographical History category, the winning research papers were: The Journey of the 50 Years, The UAE’s Efforts in Confronting COVID-19 and Reaching Mars: Probe of the Hope.
However, the winning research papers of the Oral History category were: Minerals Throughout History, Theater in the UAE: a Long History and a Promising Future, The Nobility of the Mother of the UAE Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, and The Importance of the Emirati Women’s Role in Empowerment and Influence.
The research paper Traditional Handcrafts in the UAE won the award of the Economic History category while The Emirati Genome was the winner of the Social History category.
On the other hand, the winning reports were: Scent of History filling the White City, The Emirati Heritage and Culture, The UAE and Voluntary Work, and The Flag Martyr.

Anticipating the fulfillment of goals that serve the strategy of both parties
The National Library and Archives signs a memorandum of understanding with Trends aimed at strengthening cooperation

The National Library and Archives (NLA) and the Trends Research and Advisory Center have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening their strategic relationships, enhancing collaboration in scientific and research fields, and exchanging experts, successful experiences and scientific publications as well as areas of common interest which lead to achieving goals that serve the strategy of both sides.
The MOU was signed by H.E. Abdulla Majed Al Ali, Acting Director General, on behalf of the National Library and Archives, and H.E. Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Al Ali, CEO, on behalf of Trends Center in the presence of several department directors and officials from both institutions.
H.E. Abdulla Majid Al Ali, Director General of the National Library and Archives said that this MOU strengthens the existing links between the two parties and establishes distinct future relations, especially as we look forward in the next phase to establishing the National Library to be an edifice, a national landmark and a cultural illumination center.  He added that the NLA is certain that the publications and research of the Trends Centre will enrich the library, and that constructive cooperation with Trends is essential and of mutual benefit.

His Excellency stressed the MOU’s importance because of both sides’ interest in scientific research, as the NLA puts the historical and heritage scientific research of the UAE and the Gulf region at the forefront of its priorities and pursues the preservation of the memory of the nation for posterity. He added that joint scientific research on common issues and topics will be of more scientific value and benefit.

His Excellency thanked the management of the Trends Center and all concerned for the good cultural cooperation and coordination to sign this memorandum, which is in the interest of both sides. He also praised the unique and extensive research published in Trends’ books and periodicals.  He pointed out the need to implement the MOU’s terms in the framework of exchanging all forms of publications and conducting joint scientific and research activities including conferences, seminars, lectures and workshops.
H.E. Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Al Ali, CEO of Trends Center, said that signing this memorandum with the NLA will further regulate our relationships, adding that both parties need this cooperation, which will enrich the research experiences and fields with successful experiences.
His Excellency thanked the National Library and Archives for its constructive efforts in preserving the memory of the nation, and for its historical publications and scientific research. He also stressed the importance the of team spirit between the two sides to achieve scientific integration that results in innovative and distinguished scientific research.

The  memorandum provides for more areas of cooperation such as conducting joint research, organizing research activities, issuing publications and research reports, supporting research collaboration, strengthening networks that communicate with local and international partners, exchanging ideas and perspectives on issues of interest to both parties, benefiting from each other's relations with the media, and conducting any other type of research cooperation that serves the objectives of both parties and is consistent with this MOU.

The National Library and Archives Continues its Activities on its Platform at Abu Dhabi International Book Fair
The National Library and Archives continued its distinguished participation in its platform at Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2022; which witnessed two new books signing ceremonies on Al Dhafra region, namely: (The Gazetteer of Places’ Names in the Poetry of the People of Al Dhafra) by Ali Ahmed Al Kindi Al Marar, and (Migrants from Al Dhafra.. The Migration of Bani Zaraf as a Model) by Abdullah Muhammad Al Muhairi.
The signing took place in the presence of His Excellency Abdullah Majid Al Ali, Acting Director General of the National Library and Archives. His Excellency emphasized the importance of the history and heritage of Al Dhafra region as an important part in the history of both the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates. HE also asserted that the National Library and Archives has realized the importance of documenting this history and heritage in its publications in order to enrich the library and to preseve the same for the generations to come.
It is noteworthy that the first book is a gazetteer of places’ names mentioned in the poetry of some of the poets of Al Dhafra region, or in their oral heritage, or from the memory of some of the senior people of the region. The author arranged this gaetteer in alphabetical order, and defined each of one of these places - be it a watering place, a city, a village or a country... - indicating its location, its borders, its features and its importance..., and citing what the ancient or the modern authors said about it, or what he heard from the senior citizens or the interviews he conducted with some of them in Al Dhafra region. The book is one of the valuable and well-documented references of the history of the UAE.
The second book is a study in the history of Emirati tribal migrations, tracing their routes, and determining the lineages and offsprings of the migrating people in accordance with an objective scientific vision that relies on the methodology of that links the new outcomes of the scientific genetic model with the developments in the theoretical historical model. The book emphasizes that the study of local genealogies do not need a novel, poem or story that tells us about the origins of the tribes and their migrations, as the role of oral narrations and stories in the majlises and forums has not been a good means of genealogy documentation and codification and now the advanced scientific research is taking over this role. The researcher combines two research methods: firstly the theoretical scientific method, which depends greatly on the context significance and speech clues and seconly the applied scientific method.
The book has eight topics: the first topic deals with the tribal migration in the writings of local historians, the second topic reveals the tribal migration in the writings of Western travelers and politicians and the third topic deals with the migration of Arab tribes to Al Dhafra and Twam and other places. The fourth topic explores the early migration of the prople of Al Dhafra to the northern eastern region, the fifth topic throws lights of the diaspora of the people of Al Dhafra in the 14th century. The sixth topic traces the migrations and the genealogies of the people of Al Dhafra and the destinations for these migrations, the seventh topic uncovers Yas migration in the memoirs of Ibn Zahir and the eighth topic is about the migaration of Bani Zaraf as a model.

The National Library and Archives celebrates Al Dhafra region through its five new publications on Al Dhafra region launched at its platform in the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2022. Its great interest in this region came due to its importance in the history and heritage of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and its great role in documenting the past of the United Arab Emirates.
Al Dhafra enjoys the privilege of being a historical area with excellence, it was - and will remain - the pride of the Emirati heritage. Its land includes many historical monuments, namely: inscriptions, engraved rock-drawings, historical buildings, wells and ponds. Its is famous for its abundant springs and water resources throughout its land, its people are renowned poets and poetry majlis or councils constitute an essential part of their authentic culture.
on these publications, which reflect the extent of the National Library and Archives’ interest in Al Dhafra region, His Excellency Abdulla Majed Al Ali, the Acting Director General, said: The distinctive geographical location of Al Dhafra region, its rich heritage, beautiful natural reserves, and fertile palm plantations which earned it the title of the date trade center. Under our wise leadership, it has become a center for various major projects - all of which attracted the attention of researchers and historians to Al Dhafra to examine its past when it was the stronghold of the Bani Yas tribe, and its present of various major projects, and modern cities, alongside which various schools and health centers emerged.
His Excellency added: The National Library and Archives takes pride in these publications, that were written by Emirati researchers and writers. We are highly interested in encouraging these writers who excel at documenting the nation's history, heritage, and the biographies of its great leaders, in line with the National Library and Archives’ role of providing intellectuals, academics and researchers specialized and documented historical information.
It is note-worthy that two books were recently launched by the National Library and Archives at its participating platform in the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2022: The first: (Al Dhafra Fort) by Abdullah Muhammad Al Muhairi, is a historical study which depicts the history of the Abu Dhabi Rulers and princes from Al Dhafra Fort to Qasr Al-Hosn in Abu Dhabi, and highlights the civilized role of the Bani Yas princes in the past and their heroic stances, through historical, geographical and demographic information on the first Bani Yas princes and on Al Dhafra region and its residents whether Bani Yas or Manasir, and on the resulting analysis and conclusions.
The second book which was signed today at the National Library and Archives’ platform is: (Al Dhafra Region in the United Kingdom Government’s political agent’s note in 1955) by Researcher, Ali Ahmed Al Kindi Al Marar. The book is based on the memorandum written by British government officials, including documented and accurate information on Al Dhafra regions, resources, tribes, sheikhs, and inhabitants’ lifestyle. The researcher contributed to the content of this note which is particularly important to the history of Abu Dhabi, and that of the UAE in general by adding some information and brief comments in the book’s footnotes to benefit readers, he also edited any found errors therein.
The National Library and Archives will continue the signing of other new publications on Al Dhafra region at its platform at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair.

The Archives and the National Library continue their efforts to hold the fourth symposium within its cultural season 2022 under the slogan "Libraries in the UAE... Millennium Aspirations", which is scheduled to be held virtually on Wednesday, May 25th. Abdullah Majid Al-Ali, Acting Director General, said that the platform of the National Library and Archives (NLA) at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2022 will witness the launch of several new and translated publications, mainly books celebrating Al-Dhafra region and discussing its history, heritage and water resources for its historical significance in the history of Abu Dhabi.  The NLA will also organize a cultural program on the sidelines of the book fair.
This was part of His Excellency's talk about the NLA’s participation in the 31st edition of Abu Dhabi International Book Fair with a platform which showcases old and modern publications about the history and heritage of the UAE and the Gulf region.  The NLA’s platform will host events covering all days of the exhibition and will introduce its various projects and services to researchers and those interested in the UAE's history and heritage.
His Excellency commented on this participation saying that the NLA is keen, as ever, to participate in this major cultural event to represent its educational role, encourage the dissemination of the culture of reading and inform its audience about its historical and heritage books, which provide documented and honest information to promote the spirit of belonging to the homeland, loyalty to its wise leadership and national identity enhancement.
His Excellency added that the NLA will highlight the agenda of its projects in various fields and inform the exhibition visitors about the new publications which will be launched in Abu Dhabi International Book Fair. It will also hold many national lectures and workshops on the sidelines of the exhibition.
The NLA’s platform at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair offers the exhibition's audience and participants the chance to learn about the services provided by its national trio: the Archives, the National Library, and the Preservation and Restoration building.
It should be noted that the NLA’s platform will witness the launch of the following publications "Al Dhafra Fort ", "Immigrants from Al Dhafra", "Al Dhafra Region in the Memorandum of the Under-Secretary of the United Kingdom in 1955", "Historical Water Resources in the Al Dhafra Region", and "The Arabian Peninsula and its environs in the western expeditions, from the 5th century BC to the early 20th century."
Among the books translated into other living languages, the NLA’s platform will witness the launch of the following books: "Al-Hosn Palace, Biography of the Rulers of Abu Dhabi", "Zayed from Challenges to Union", and "Zayed, Man Who Built a Nation".
The NLA’s participation includes a cultural program full of lectures and reading workshops in the Event Platform of the Kids’ Hall at the book fair. These lectures and cultural workshops discuss the NLA’s books, namely "Zayed from Challenges to Union", "Khalifa, A Journey into the Future", the educational booklet "Watani Al Emarat", and "Qasr Al Hosn", in addition to “Al Masirah”, which includes readings in the NLA’s publications.
Additionally, the NLA will hold several side educational workshops for School Students in collaboration with the Emirates Schools Establishment. It will also hold several lectures, namely the UAE, Homeland of Tolerance and Zayed’s Ambition Reaches Space
The platform will feature a special corner for restoration to introduce the public to the importance of the NLA’s restoration laboratory in bringing damaged documents back to life, and giving old documents a longer life by restoring and preserving them in appropriate conditions and according to ideal standards.
It is worth mentioning that the NLA’s platform will display on its facades documents chronicling important stages of the UAE’s history, and showing the NLA’s role and functions in preserving the documentary heritage of the state, mainly historical photographs of the Emirates sheikhs who impressed the whole world with their achievements. There will also be screens that show short films documenting the UAE's renaissance and prosperity and the efforts of its great leaders who established the Union, developed the people and the place, and made the UAE a modern country among the top countries of the world.

The National Library and Archives Concludes the Second International Translation Conference and Announces the Third Edition for the Next Year
At the end of the 2nd International Translation Conference that was held for five days under the slogan “Translation and Preservation of the Memory of the Nation: The Image of the UAE in Cultures, Literatures and World Intellectual Heritage”,  H.E. Abdulla Majed Ali, Acting Director General of the NLA, assured that the UAE leads the cultural movement in the Middle East, thanks to the pioneering and continuous initiatives in all relevant fields, including the support of translation and publishing movement around the world. He also emphasized that translation bridges will remain a link for dialogue among cultures and will spread the culture of tolerance among peoples and nations.
His Excellency pointed out that the NLA, which has organized the conference will remain a beacon of culture and a fount of human knowledge; and he thanked all participants and researchers who enriched the conference sessions and contributed to its success. He announced that the NLA intends to organize the 3rd edition of the conference next year.
At the conference’s concluding session, which was chaired by Mr. Hamad Al Hamiri, Director of the Research and Knowledge Services Department and Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Prof. Saddik Gohar, Translation Expert at the NLA, put forward the recommendations. The most prominent recommendations were holding the NLA’s translation conference annually in the presence of all participants after the Coronavirus pandemic is over, diversifying the conference topics while focusing on the latest translation studies all over the world, immediate translation of the conference activities, specifying a referred journal to publish the conference’s research and studies on paper and electronically, awarding a prize to the best research paper, hosting a famous international figure every year at the conference, creating a website for the conference and entering into partnership with active translation institutions at the international level and others.
The last session of the conference entitled “Contemporary Approaches to Translation and Culture” was chaired by the writer Fatma Sultan Al Mazrouei, Head of Historical Archive Section at the NLA. Prof. Jamal Maqableh from Department of Arabic Language and Literature in the UAE University started this session with a study entitled “Representations of the Intellectual: Various Readings and Endless Translations”, followed by a research paper entitled “Kalima” project as a Linking Point of Knowledge and Cultural Communication between Civilizations and Nations” by Dr. Mohamed Mansour El-Hoody, Lecturer of Arabic and Islamic Studies from Doha, Qatar.
Furthermore, Prof. Hassan Ghazala from Umm Al-Qura University, KSA, and Dr. Naima Ahmed Al-Ghamdi from Imam Abdul Rahman bin Faisal University, KSA, presented joint research entitled “Navigating the Linguistic, Cognitive, Communicative, Cultural and Technological Dimensions of Translation: An Integrative Approach”. After that Dr. Mohamed Fawzy Al-Ghazi from Taiba University, KSA, presented the paper “Towards an Arabic Theory of Translation: Signs and Aspirations” while Dr. Ahmed Afifi, Professor of Linguistics at Cairo University, Egypt, discussed his study entitled “The Impact of translation in Achieving Civilized Communication between Nations”. Dr. Rehab Mohamed Mustafa Darwish from Alexandria University, Egypt, concluded this session with her research paper entitled “The Application of the Transparency Theory in Translation: “The Lost Hope” Narrative as an Analytical Study”.
It is worth mentioning that the NLA’s second translation conference contained 14 sessions, at which participants presented 70 academic research papers on translation issues and their relationship with other sciences and knowledge.

The National Library and Archives Highlights the UAE Image in Historical Translations
On Day 4 of the Second International Translation Conference entitled “Translation and Preservation of the Memory of the Nation: The Image of the UAE in Cultures, Literatures and World Intellectual Heritage” that was held by the NLA, research papers and academic studies discussed the importance of translation in the UAE history. They highlighted the writings of the traveler Wilfred Thesiger about the emirates he visited where he met the Founding Leader Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, aspects of the UAE image in the eyes of European travelers, and challenges of translation and machine translation at present as well as the importance of translation in enriching cultures.
Three successive academic sessions tackled 18 research papers of the most significant and recent studies on translation and its relationship with other sciences and knowledge. The sessions focused on the UAE image in other cultures and foreign texts translated from various languages.
On Day 4, the conference started with the first session entitled “The Emirates in the Eyes of Others: Issues in Translation and Thought” chaired by Dr. Aisha Balkhair, Research Advisor at the NLA. Professor Yahya Mohamed Mahmoud Ahmed from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at the UAE University, presented a research paper entitled “Sir Wilfred Patrick Thesiger and his Translation of the Emirati Bedouin Heritage in the Mid-Twentieth Century” while Dr. Samar Mounir from Ain Shams University, Egypt, gave a paper entitled “German Vision of the UAE: The Image of Emirati women between Past and Present: An Overview of “Women in the United Arab Emirates between Tradition and Modernity- The Emirate of Dubai as a Model”. Dr. Youmna Azmi Abdel Rahman from the Spanish Language Section of the Faculty of Al Alsun, Ain Shams University, Egypt, presented a study entitled “The Image of the UAE in Spanish Literature: Cultural Diversity and Emotional Conflict in “Letters from Dubai” by Asunta Lopez”. The first session concluded with a paper by Dr. Hosni Mallitat from the Arab American University in Ramallah, Palestine, entitled “The Emirati Translation Achievement: The Role of Kalima Translation Project in the Development of Arab Culture”.
The second session entitled ‘Machine Translation Challenges and Cultural Entanglements between Different Languages” was chaired by Mr. Abdullatif Al Sayyadi, Research Expert at the NLA. It began with study entitled “The Role of Semantic Space in Solving Machine Translation Problems: Construction and Description of a New Applied Technical Model” by Professor Labidi Bouabdallah and Dr. Haitham Zeinhom Morsi from Mohammed bin Zayed University for Human Sciences. On the other hand, Dr. Emad Khalaf a translator from Sharjah gave a paper entitled “Machine Translation between Arabic and Persian: An Analytical Study and Criteria for a Better Translation” and Dr. Elham Mahmoud Mohamed Badr from Ain Shams University, Egypt, presented a study entitled “Machine Translation and its Role in the Digitization of the Arabic Language: Improving the Quality of Machine Translation from Hebrew to Arabic - (Leaked Words from Yiddish to Hebrew as an example”. In a related context, Dr. Atef Abbas Abdel Hamid Ahmed, Information Technology and Electronic Archiving Consultant, UAE, delivered a paper entitled “Handling Linguistic Rrrors in Machine Translation: An Empirical Study on “Google Translate”. In the same context, Dr. Shahira Zarnaji from the University of Mohamed Khider in Biskra, Algeria, made a critical analytical comparison study entitled “The Dangers and Slips of Machine Translation - The Arabic Translation of Virginia Woolf’s Novel (Mrs. Dalloway) as a Model”. Dr. Alarabi Al-Hadhrawi from the College of Arts and Human Sciences of Mohammed V University in Rabat, Morocco, concluded the session with a study entitled “The Cognitive and Technological Dimension of Translating Scientific Terms within Literary Studies”.
The third and last session of Day 4 entitled “Translation and Creativity in the Post-Globalization Era: Great Aspirations and New Translation Theories” was chaired by Dr. Hazaa Al Naqabi, Head of Governmental Archives at the NLA.
This session started with a research paper entitled “Problems of Translating Proper Names from Japanese to Arabic” by Professor Maher El-Sherbini from the Department of Japanese Language at Cairo University, Egypt. Then, Dr. Ahmed Abdel Moneim Aqili, Professor of Modern Literature and a Member of the Emirates Writers Union, presented his study entitled “Translation and its Important Impact on the Cultural Movement and the Teaching of Arabic language”. After that Dr.
 Nahid Ali Awwad Al-Tanani from Ain Shams University, Egypt, delivered her paper entitled “Translating Children’s Literature in the Arab world is a Gateway to Openness to other Cultures in the Globalization Era”. The study of Professor Alameed Abdel Salam Issawi from the University of Manouba, Tunisia, answered the big question of “Why does the Translation of Terms Encounter Pitfalls?”. The last two presentations were a paper entitled “Translation, Creativity and Globalization: Challenges of the Translation Industry in the Twenty-First Century” by Dr. Mohamed Helmy Abdel Wahab from the German Research Institute in Cairo, Egypt, and a study entitled “Authentication as a Condition for Creativity: The Theory of Translation according to Taha Abdel Rahman” by Professor Tariq Shamma from Binghamton University in New York, USA.

The research papers presented by participating Academics, Scholars and Specialists on the third day of the Second International Translation Conference held by the National Library and Archives under the slogan (Translation and Preserving the Memory of the Nation: The Image of the UAE in Cultures, Literatures and World Intellectual Heritage) demonstrated that the UAE seeks to develop and advance the translation movement and Arab cultural works to enhance exposure to world cultures and knowledge, which indicates that the UAE  is a vital knowledge society.

The third day’s sessions presented important research papers that shed light on the translators’ experiences in translating into other living languages the following books: (Zayed from Challenge to Union), (Zayed a Man Who Built a Nation), and (Qasr Al-Hosn: The History of the Rulers of Abu Dhabi) issued by the National Library and Archives. The books recount important eras of the glorious history of the UAE up till its prosperous present. The third day of the conference included three sessions, in which the participants presented 16 research papers tackling various issues relating to translation and its various branches.

The first session, entitled (The Role of Universities in the UAE and the Arab World in Developing Translation-Teaching Programs and Preparing Translators for the Labor Market) was moderated by Mr. Al-Fatih Osman from the Translation and Publication Section at the National Library and Archives. The session began with Prof. Dr. Sattar Saeed Zwaini from the American University of Sharjah, UAE, who presented a paper entitled: “Translation Curriculum and the Role of Universities in Preparing Translators for the Job/Labor Market.” Then, Dr. Raja Lahiani from the United Arab Emirates University presented a research-paper entitled: “Reviewing UAE University Students’ Translations of Korean Poetry: A Retrospective Study.” Following which, Dr. Tariq Abdullah Fakhr El din, Chair of the Kuwait Translators Association, presented a paper entitled “Translation Studies in Arab Universities Between Alternation and Renewal.” Another research presented in this session was a study by Professor Iman Al-Rami - from Mohammed V University, Rabat, Morocco - entitled “The Role of the Arab League in Developing Translation and Proceeding towards a knowledge society.

As for the second session, it was entitled: (The Role of Translation in Enhancing the Image of the UAE and Its Cultural Heritage in the Twenty-first Century) and moderated by Dr. Husniya Al-Ali, Head of Educational Programs section in the National Library and Archives. The session began with a study by Dr. Nahed Raheel, Assistant Professor at the Department of Hebrew Language of Ain Shams University in A.R.E., entitled: “Transferring the Cultural Dimension in Translating Historical Texts: A Study on the Translation of “Qasr Al-Hosn - History of the Rulers of Abu Dhabi” into Hebrew Language.”
Then Prof. Mohamed Abdel Hamid Khalifa, Chair of the Arabic Language Department at Damanhour University in the A.R.E. presented a research-paper entitled: "Modernity or modernization in UAE between the translation of the term and the specificity of culture". Following this, Ms. Hajar Azaz, Translator and Lecturer, at the University of Lisbon, Portugal presented a paper entitled:
"The Image of the UAE and its Modern Civilizational Renaissance in the Portuguese-Speaking Community". Then, Dr. Nahla Raheel, Assistant Professor, Department of Hebrew Language at Ain Shams University, in the A.R.E., presented a paper entitled: “Cultural differences and their impact on the translation process: An approach to the Translation of “Zayed from Challenges to Union” from Arabic to Hebrew.” The session was concluded by Prof. Ramiz Mustafa Zakai, Director General of the Institute of Education, Heritage and Tourism, Tirana, Albania - with a research-paper entitled "Translating the book "Zayed, a Man Who Built a Nation" into Albanian language and its role in enhancing the image of the UAE and its cultural heritage in the Balkans."

The last session, entitled: (Contemporary Translation Issues between Theory and Practice) was moderated by Mrs. Laila Al-Ali from the Translation and Publication Section of the National Library and Archives, and began with a paper presented by Professor Yahya Abdel-Tawab, Theatre Institute, Kuwait, entitled: “Translation and Culture in the Era of Globalization”, then Dr. Shaima Mohamed Abdel-Fattah Radwan from the Faculty of Al-Alsun, Ain Shams University in the A.R.E., presented a paper entitled: “The Problems of Translating Naguib Mahfouz’s Literature into Spanish”, following which, Mr. Moaz Bani Amer, Researcher in intellectual and philosophical studies, from Irbid, Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan - presented a paper entitled “Translation errors: the backward Movement of the scholarly mind.. on the book: History of John the Nicene: Early Islam with a Coptic narrative.” Then, Mr. Khaled Arafa Salem, Researcher in Translation studies, Ajman, presented a study entitled: “Screen translation between the past and the present: a historic approach.” And Mr. Assem Fouad, Researcher and proof-reader from the A.R.E. presented a paper entitled: "The History of Translation in the Arab World between Challenges and Ambitions". The activities of the third day were concluded with a research-paper presented by Ms. Fatima Muhammad Ali, the Academic and Researcher in Childhood Studies, from the A.R.E., entitled: "The Problems of Dubbing movies for Children".
