The National Library and Archives Organizes a Ramadan Iftar in an Atmosphere of Tolerance
The National Library and Archives organized a Public Iftar party to celebrate the holy month of Ramadan in 6 April at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr Hotel - Abu Dhabi, as it used to do every year, in the context of its strategy aimed at strengthening the bonds of love and goodwill ties among its staff members.
The public breakfast, which the National Library and Archives is keen on holding it annually in the holy month seeks to enhance the friendly relations and communication among the staff members away from the daily work routine in an atmosphere of tolerance, harmony and social cohesion. The public Iftar enhances team spirit and encourages the staff members to exert more efforts leading to distinguished results that can be added to the record of achievements of the National Library and Archives in its endeavor to collect and preserve the memory of the nation.
It also contributes to building bridges and strengthening relations between the National Library and Archives and many external parties whose representatives participated in this good assembly with the staff members of the National Library and Archives. That reflects positively on the development of work environment.

The National Library and Archives sheds the light on Abu Dhabi Sustainable Development Agenda 2023
Within the context of its cultural season 2023, the National Library and Archives has organized, at its headquarters, a seminar entitled “Abu Dhabi Sustainable Development Agenda 2023” in conjunction with the Year of Sustainability as the UAE moves with its honorable march towards the bright future it makes.
The seminar, attended by H.E. Abdulla Majed Al Ali, NLA’s Director General, focused on development due to its importance as it has become a targeted goal in all aspects of life, and it would promote individuals’ development and welfare. Given its importance, governments devised plans and allocate funds for development.
The NLA shed the light on Abu Dhabi sustainable development agenda 2023 in this seminar due to the fact that it is considered a major cultural leap and owing to its importance as an ambitious plan that drives the development process. The agenda also reflects the interest in examining the prospects of future and facing rapid development challenges as well as focusing on the deliberate and sustainable growth. That is why the NLA deemed it important to highlight the agenda in its cultural season 2023, which seminars focus on sustainability.
The seminar moderated by Dr. Hazza Al Naqbi, Head of Government Archives Section at the NLA, started by a session presented by Weam Alhashmi from the Department of Government Support. In this session, she reported that H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, has announced the year 2023 to be the Year of Sustainability. She, then, tackled Abu Dhabi 2030 agenda and its importance in establishing a well-defined vision for Abu Dhabi sustainability, fulfilling its current and future requirements, developing the society, promoting a new thinking style with the aim of fostering the Emirate of Abu Dhabi’s position and long-term vision. She noted that the agenda puts forward conceptual solutions to develop the emirate in the second quarter of the century.
Alhashmi brought into focus Abu Dhabi agenda and its objectives along with the sustainable development objectives, which serve as a comprehensive roadmap and an ambitious work schedule that requires policies and transformational investments and involvement of the entire community in implementation. Moreover, she discussed the challenges of sustainable development and the role of the UAE in facing international challenges. She also reviewed real aspects of Abu Dhabi’s interest in sustainability.
The speaker turned attention to Masdar City, which is one of the most prominent sustainable urban projects in the Middle East. She demonstrated the plan devised by the government of Abu Dhabi as it shapes the future of the city in a way that ensures sustainability in all life activities.
Alhashmi enriched the session by speaking about the culture of innovation and sustainability at the government work in addition to the proposed methods to achieve sustainable development in government institutions.
In the second session, Engineer Hamad Mohsen Abdulla, Head of Technical Studies Section of the Infrastructure and Municipal Assets Sector at Abu Dhabi City Municipality, spoke about sustainability initiatives for a world-class infrastructure 2023. He pointed out the accomplishments of Abu Dhabi City Municipality including quantum leaps in the quality of the government services along with the achievements made at the local and international levels in the field of infrastructure. Furthermore, he tackled the infrastructure sustainability strategy and the smart cities strategy outcomes and achievements. He revealed the targeted fields in the smart city such as water and energy, environment and innovation, and performance and knowledge; he talked in detail about Abu Dhabi smart lighting project and its phases, Abu Dhabi system for roads sustainability classification, etc.
In addition, Engineer Hamad discussed the infrastructure assets management and development and the initiatives for infrastructure sustainability. He also reviewed some examples of initiatives for sustainability such as using recycled rubber in asphalt mixtures, the pilot project of agriculture and water studies and environmental sustainability, smart lighting using solar energy, etc.
In the last session, Dr. Wadeema Al Dhahri, a Professor at Mohammed Bin Zayed University for Humanities, said “Abu Dhabi agenda 2023 is an example of the sustainable development plans based on which Abu Dhabi Government formulated a long-term plan that lasts until 2030, and the main topics of this plan are: the economic development, social and human resources development, infrastructure development, environment protection and promoting the government performance.”
Dr. Wadeema, then, reviewed the 17 objectives of Abu Dhabi vision 2030. She shed the light on Mubadala, Statra Manufacturing, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi and Masdar City. In conclusion, she reported that the UAE has a unique experience in development, and in all its different stages, it was governed by a prudent leadership and was served by its loyal citizens along with the global expertise. Thus, the UAE became distinctive because of its achievements at the international level in short period of time.

Achieved a secure digital preservation of the nation’s memory for more than 2000 years to come
The National Library and Archives Achieves a Distinction in the Long-term Digital Preservation
The National Library and Archives launched its pioneering project to convert and permanently and securely preserve the original data for long periods that may reach more than 2000 years, in collaboration with Piql and Melara ME international companies.
This qualitative step came in line with the UAE’s inspiring initiatives, efforts and strategies in the field of sustainability, the vision of its wise leadership and its sound directives for the purpose of leaving a positive legacy to the future generations.
This project affirms that the National Library and Archives is the faithful custodian of the memory of the nation, and the pioneer of preservation of historical records - since its establishment in 1968 under the directives of the builder and founder, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
The National Library and Archives exerts efforts to transform information and securely preserve it for future generations, by using the latest information technology solutions in the field of data preservation, done with Emirati experts at all local, regional and international levels.
The role of the National Library and Archives will not be limited to government entities only, it will also expand to serve private entities, museums, libraries, bodies preserving heritage. This service will reach the individuals who will benefit from it in the field of digital preservation and protection of valuable information and data in the long term to in order to make them available for future generations.
The cooperation of the National Library and Archives  with the two international companies is a real evidence of its earnest interest in preserving, documenting, archiving and strengthening the memory of the nation according to the latest and most advanced international technologies for successive generations and the possibility of accessing information easily.
This project is a continuation of the phase of converting traditional documents into digital ones, as part of the National Library and Archives’ future interest in designing a future worthy of the UAE glorious history and deep-rooted heritage and preserving it in accordance with the highest standards, best practices and global digital technologies with high accuracy against attempts of piracy, manipulation and scanning.

The unique and advanced Piql technology will enable the National Library and Archives  to preserve information - of all kinds - in its original form on special films that can be easily retrieved in the future, so that generations can benefit from them.
This project will enable the National Library and Archives to transfer and preserve data, expand its status as a regional center of excellence, transfer expertise, research and development in the field of digital preservation and long-term data preservation and ability to learn from standards and experiences in the field of archiving.
Regarding this project, Mr. Hamad Abdulla Al Mutairi, Director of the Archives Department said: This cooperation reflects the richness of the National Library and Archives’s march, its efforts to achieve its goals in the next fifty years set by the UAE to celebrate the centenary anniversary of its founding as it aspires to become amongst the ranks of developed countries in the world.
He added, “Thanks to the directives of senior management regarding the sustainable archive preservation for future generations, we have accessed the latest advanced technologies in digital preservation and long-term information protection. The project will enable us to benefit from world-leading technologies.”
Mr. René Bjerk-Strand, CEO of Piql International, said: “This new participation is an inspiring cooperation, which is of great importance to the United Arab Emirates, the region, and the company.

The National Library and Archives and Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi celebrating the graduation ceremony of the 9th cohort of students of the Professional Certificate in Archives and Records Management

The National Library and Archives and Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi celebrated the graduation ceremony of the 9th cohort of students of the Professional Certificate in Archives and Records Management held at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi’s campus. This cohort included a big number of professionals from various sectors, including the Ministry of Defence, Emirates News Agency (WAM), NLA, Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, Department of Education and Knowledge, and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA).
On this occasion, H.E. Abdullah Majed Al Ali, Director-General of the NLA, said: “It is great that the graduation of the 9th cohort of students of the Professional Certificate in Archives and Records Management coincides with National Reading Month, which we celebrate at the National Library and Archives with hundreds of events and activities. On this occasion, I am pleased to extend my warmest congratulations to the graduated students, and I hope that they will be able to apply the knowledge they gained during their study in their fields of work. I would like to thank the academic staff and the Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi for their efforts”.
“This certificate enhances the students’ archiving and documentation skills so that it earns the trust of those working in the archiving field. It also attracted a large turnout from across the UAE with the aim of promoting the skills of the employees at federal and local government archives. That is why the NLA and Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi are preparing for organizing the professional certificate courses outside Sorbonne University campus in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi”, he added.
His Excellency emphasized that this certificate preserves its value and status because it keeps pace with the rapid technological development, and it comes in accordance with the requirements of archives organization and the development of their practices and standards in line with the future expectations. Accordingly, it became a worthy professional certificate. This heralds the transition to the knowledge economy that supports the knowledge community.
Dr. Laurence Renault, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Academic Affairs at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, congratulated the graduates for their remarkable efforts to receive this certificate. She expressed her gratitude to the faculty members for providing high-quality education. She continued “It is our pleasure to celebrate again the success of this academic program of archives and records management, which represents the exceptional relationship between Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi and the NLA. We are always keen on providing outstanding programmes of high educational levels to foster the students’ skills and expand their professional horizons”.
At the end of the ceremony, H.E. Abdulla Majed Al Ali and Dr. Laurence Renault honoured the graduates and awarded certificates to them.
It is worth mentioning that the ceremony was attended by Dr. Majed Al Khemeiri, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Administrative and Financial Affairs at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, Mr. Hamad Al Mutairi, Director of the Archives Department at the NLA, and a number of VIPs and directors from both institutions.

The National Library and Archives Organizes an Internal Book Fair and Receives Delegations of Student

The National Library and Archives organized a book fair at its headquarters, as part of the activities of its program in the UAE Reading Month. Many libraries and publishing houses participated in it, and displayed many national and cultural books and publications that witnessed a high turnout with the staff members and visitors. At the same time, many school students visited the fair, and the National Library and Archives organized for them reading workshops on the book: (Zayed from Challenges to Union).
About the fair, Mr. Farhan Al-Marzouqi, Director of Corporate and Community Outreach Department at the National Library and Archives, said: “The book fair has become an annual tradition organized by the National Library and Archives at its headquarters in conjunction with the UAE Reading Month, and as it was successful in the previous years, received a huge demand for reading and purchasing of national, cultural and scientific publications offered by the participating publishing houses and libraries, and in addition to its great impact in promoting the culture of reading, all that made us more keen to organize it this year as a part of the activities announced by the National Library and Archives in its busy program that will be implemented during the days of the UAE Reading Month.”
He added: “The book fair, organized by the National Library and Archives over a period of three days, is a window to the most prominent publications that contribute to educating the staff members, enriching their knowledge and encouraging them for serious and useful reading. At the same time, this fair integrates its richness with the rest of the activities of the UAE Reading Month by reflecting the contribution the National Library and Archives in the cultural and intellectual movement in the UAE.”
Al-Marzouqi praised the cooperation shown by the participating publishing houses and libraries and pointed out that this cultural event has also witnessed student scientific visits to the National Library and Archives.
It is noteworthy that the most prominent participants in the book fair were: All Prints, Dar Al Saada Bookstore, Al Safa Book Shop, Hekayat Bookstore, University Bookshop and others. On the first day of the fair, the National Library and Archives received student visits from the Higher College of Technology, and Halima Al Saadia and Hamouda Bin Ali Abu Dhabi schools and organized reading workshops for the students on the book: (Zayed from Challenges to Union), which is considered one of the most important national publications and inculcates the national identity in their hearts. This will contribute in instilling the passion for reading among these generations, and establishes a positive reading as a sustainable societal culture in them. All lies within the core of interest of the National Library and Archives in creating a sound national upbringing of the coming generations.

The National Archives and Library organizes a poetry evening in conjunction with International Women's Day
The National Library and Archives, in cooperation with the Sanad Al-Watan Women Society, organized a virtual poetry evening in conjunction with International Women’s Day. This is the 3rd event of the NLA’s second cultural season 2023, and it is held in appreciation of women for their achievements in various fields and their contributions to civilizational progress and human development.
The poetry evening was opened with a speech by Dr. Amina Al Majed, Chairperson of the Sanad Al Watan Women Society. She started by referring to a statement by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation "Mother of the Nation", in which she praised the Emirati women for their proven commitment, fulfillment of the responsibilities of their tenures, and their competency in supporting their country in all circumstances. The statement also indicated that in preparation for the next 50 years, the Emirati women must be the strategic and partners in the process of foreseeing the future.
On this occasion, Dr. Amina Al Majed congratulated the "Mother of the Nation", the inspirer of women, who empowered and entrusted them with decision-making positions.
Al Majed pointed out that Women's Day was declared to mark women's demands for gender equality; however, women in the United Arab Emirates have obtained their rights. She added that the wise leadership’s distinguished support provided women with success elements and the appropriate environment, and it enhanced their rights in all fields. Thus, Emirati women have proven their ability to compete, and their achievements established them as models of ambition and creativity.
She added that the United Arab Emirates has established the Emirates Gender Balance Council, which is responsible for developing and implementing the gender balance agenda in the UAE.  All institutions follow the guidelines of the Council.
Hamsa Ahmed Younis, a poet and media personality, confirmed that every woman living in the UAE took advantage of excellence and creativity opportunities. She also talked about her poetic experience, and how she managed to strike a balance between her talent as a writer and her interest in her family as a housewife.
Tahani Altamimi, a poet and media personality, congratulated women around the world on their achievements, stressing that their creativity is limitless. She called for more giving and shed light on her poetic inspiration source.
Bardis Khalifa, a poet and journalist, spoke about her poetic experience, stressing that poetry is evolving. She emphasized that constant studying of literature and poetry is a must for poets since poetry is a mixture of talent and culture. She talked about the challenges she faced in her literary career, noting that every successful person will face difficulties and challenges. She praised the march of women led by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak in the UAE, and highly valued Her Highness’ efforts, which brought about the development and empowerment of Emirati women.
The participating poets recited some poems in which they expressed their love for the homeland and its great leaders, and touched on the unlimited giving of women.

Concluding the Innovation Month of the Year of Sustainability with the Second Symposium in its Cultural Season,
The National Library and Archives organized a specialized symposium entitled “Innovation, the Approach to Excellence for a Sustainable Society”

The National Library and Archives concluded the Innovation Month with its second symposium entitled “Innovation, the Approach to Excellence for a Sustainable Society” within the context of its cultural season 2023. The symposium stressed that focusing on innovation is fundamental for a sustainable future as it supports achievement and success, and that innovation and creativity should be instilled among generations. This symposium is one of the NLA’s initiatives for the Year of Sustainability; it highlights the UAE’s achievements, efforts and inspiring strategies to maintain sustainability.
The symposium was introduced by Engineer Anwar Al Shammari, the first Emirati validator and assessor of engineering projects. She talked about innovation in the UAE and defined it as a developed, tested and implemented idea that serves public interest and might be in the form of a new product or service, or an update of internal processes based on proposing a policy, thinking differently or cessation of certain practices that haven’t proven successful. She then differentiated between innovation and creativity. Creativity is the ability to generate novel ideas using innovative tools while innovation entails the implementation of these ideas in real life.
Al Shammari discussed the importance of innovation, its fields, best practices and implementation stages in the UAE as well as the global innovation index, innovation in organizations and the future trends. She supported her information with several real examples of modern technologies. Furthermore, she reviewed some of the innovation tools and challenges, traits of innovation leader, role of institutional leadership in implementing innovation concepts, qualifying human resources, providing innovative and positive environment and motivating employees.
Dr. Wadima Ghanem Bin Hamouda Al Dhahri, Assistant Professor at Mohamed Bin Zayed University for Humanities, talked about creativity and innovation from concept to skills. She started with the Brazilian novelist Paulo Coelho’s quote: “A goal without a plan is just a wish”.
She then pointed out that innovation is change, creation of new processes or introduction of new products that are more efficient and able to solve a problem. She gave the proof of the wheel invention, which led to the invention of vehicles in addition to the invention of the light bulb, confirming that all major inventions are very simple and surprising. The speaker then explained the traditional method to solve a problem, which starts with problem evaluation and setting a workplan and then an operational plan. At the end come the review and assessment.
She stopped at the traditional method and new strategies.
To prove her information, Dr. Wadima presented green buildings and the journey of “Zayed Ambition 2), which is the longest space mission in the history of Arabs and is a part of the UAE astronaut programme. This mission was carried out by the Emirati astronaut, Sultan Al Neyadi.
The third speaker was Mr. Saeed Belhoul, Executive Director and Expert in information security and its technologies. He shed the light on the sustainability path at the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (“Authority”), indicating that in accordance with the UAE strategy for maintaining environment, saving natural resources and reducing carbon footprint and global warming, the Authority implemented the highest international standards for green buildings. That is why the Authority has received the leadership certificate for energy and environment designs.
Belhoul discussed, in detail, the sustainability path at the Authority and the sustainable working environment in its building as well as operation. He presented the digital services design standards in the UAE and highlighted the federal electronic network, which is one of the Authority’s main strategic initiatives, the high-performance internet gateway, government services link, digital identity, cloud infrastructure, etc.
Ms. Marwa Al Naqi, an expert in commercial transactions, tackled innovation and future industry, DEWA as a model. She started her talk with a quote by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai: "The future belongs to those who can imagine it, design it and execute it. It isn't something you await, but rather create.”.
She then introduced the Authority as a leading sustainable and innovative international institution along with its strategic plan. Having presented the Authority’s objectives, vision, mission, theme and values, Marwa listed some of its achievements and initiatives and provided some promising figures and facts about the Authority.
At the end of the symposium, Mr. Farhan Al Marzooqi, Director of Corporate and Community Outreach Department at the NLA, honored the speakers and awarded certificates of appreciation and shields.

The National Library and Archives focuses on artificial intelligence techniques in the field of translation.
At its Third International Translation Conference, perceiving "Technology as a Fast Bridge to the Future".  

The National Library and Archives third international translation conference, held at its headquarters in Abu Dhabi during the period from (8-9) March 2023, shall focus on artificial intelligence great impact on translation, and the role of modern technology in machine translation development, taking into consideration that researchers and specialists shall present at the conference thirty research papers highlighting the artificial intelligence role in translation development.

The National Library and Archives' great interest in this conference, which will be held under the theme "Artificial Intelligence, Translation and the Enrichment of National Libraries", stems from the constant evolution of machine translation, and the NLA’s firm belief that it is a prime cross-culture and border tributary nourishing universal thought.

Thirty translation researchers and specialists including university professors and other professionals with international translation experience shall participate in this specialized international conference, including 12 researchers from the   UAE and 18 from abroad.
On the importance of this conference, His Excellency Abdullah Majed Al Ali, Director General of the National Library and Archives said: "The combination of translation with modern technologies, and artificial intelligence, along with the development of social media virtual platforms – resulted in achieving quantum translation leaps. The openness to technological media, programs and curricula’s modern information systems development methods which have strongly invaded the translation field resulted in enhancing translation efficiency and flexibility, and in its contribution to improving performance, production and achieving the desired goals that match the developments and meet potential challenges.
He added: " The National Library and Archives attached great importance to the power of knowledge and to keeping pace with the world technology and artificial intelligence, it keeps pace with these societies’ transformation towards knowledge societies, and the economy’s quantum leap towards a knowledge economy.   This aims at perceiving the future as we proceed towards the UAE centenary where our nation aspires to take the lead in various fields, especially the field of knowledge production, localization and employment, and to establish its basic pillars including education, scientific research and innovation, information technology and communication development, and an interest in various languages and translation. The UAE was one of the first countries to implement the civilizational and human transformation from an information society to a knowledge society, then to innovation society.
